Flat design dominated the internet for years. It works well, but it can feel too simple. Google’s Material Design added some depth with layers and shadows, but designers eventually wanted something more tactile.
That is where Neumorphism (or Soft UI) comes in.
It blends flat design with realistic shadows to make elements look like they are extruded from the background. It creates a soft, plastic-like look that feels unique. While the trend peaked a few years ago, it remains a popular aesthetic for dashboards, music players, and smart home apps.

What Is Neumorphism?
Neumorphism combines “New” and “Skeuomorphism.”
In standard Material Design, elements float above the background. In Neumorphism, elements look like they push up from the background.
You achieve this effect using two shadows:
- A light shadow on the top-left (usually white).
- A dark shadow on the bottom-right (usually a dark tone of the background color).
This creates a 3D illusion where the interface looks like a single, continuous surface.

Before you download the resources below, you need to understand the main downside of this style: Contrast.
Neumorphism relies on subtle shadow differences. This makes it very hard for visually impaired users to see the edges of buttons or cards. It also fails in bright sunlight on mobile screens.
How to use it safely:
- Do not use it for primary “Call to Action” buttons (like “Buy Now”).
- Do not use it for text fields without adding a border.
- Do use it for non-essential containers, cards, or visual decorations.
- Always combine it with high-contrast text and icons.

Neumorphism is no longer “the next big thing,” and that is okay. It has settled into a specific niche.
It works best when you use it sparingly. Instead of making your entire website neumorphic, try using it for a single card element or a specific dashboard widget. This keeps your design modern without sacrificing usability.
Focus on the user experience first. If the soft shadows make the interface hard to read, revert to flat design for those specific elements. Use the resources above to experiment and find the right balance for your project.
